Veterans Commons creates a residential community for 75 veterans with disabilities. The design intent is to embody the dignity, comfort, and resiliency that the sponsor seeks to support for each resident. The chronically homeless veterans housed in the building each have a studio apartment and access wrap-around public and private services including on site case management, mental health counseling, geriatric, drug dependency and employment programs.
Residents speak about the building as a metaphor for their changing lives. Roxane Roberts, 64, spoke of her life, “It’s the civility, not being ashamed of my place, no roaches, no rats. It was just so good that you had to get better yourself.”
