The historic building had a long way to go before it could open as a supportive housing community for 75 chronically homeless veterans. Originally a juvenile detention and court facility, the change required new systems, new circulation, and fire life safety upgrades. The design added outdoor space and a covered porch, and maximizes the existing structure to create light-filled corridors and generous studio units. The new brightly colored elevator bank added beyond the building envelope shores up the building against seismic forces. Inviting community spaces encourage residents to join in to group events.
