Los Altos Elementary Schools

LASD is one of the highest performing districts in California. We took six aging elementary schools and turned them into full contemporary facilities. The schools are now modern, improved instructional buildings, with multipurpose rooms and libraries, all with maximized daylighting and natural ventilation. The campuses present new faces to the community and have more variety of social, athletic, and play space.

The former kindergarten building was modernized, expanded, and converted to the new administration building. We then added new kindergarten buildings, and modernized existing classrooms.

For school buildings we design, this is an example of how we’ve completely redefined the concept of green buildings. New clerestory windows bring daylight into the classrooms.  And an ingenious automated system opens them when temperatures rise, creating fresh air and providing a comfortable place to learn. With fresh air and daylight, we take the emphasis off of personal (dis) comfort and keep the focus on education.

Modernized classrooms have new light monitors.

Along with modernizing classroom and multi-use buildings, we added the kindergarten and small group instruction rooms. We also took advantage of outdoor space by adding shared learning patios and native plantings.
